Sikh temple presidents slam plans for a new gurdwara for ‘future generations’ in the town

London,UK:-Ambitious plans for a new gurdwara for ‘future generations’ have been slammed by the presidents of the town’s two Sikh temples who fear it will divide the ‘homogenous’ community.

Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha president Sadhu Jogi and Ramgarhia Sikh Gurdwara president Surinder Chaggar hit out this week following news of the newly-formed Slough Sikh Sangat Trust’s (SSST) grand plans for a £15m ‘inclusive’ gurdwara and education and media complex.

The trust claims the current two gurdwaras in Sheehy Way and Woodlands Avenue, do not have a ‘vision and strategy’ to cope with the additional needs and number of affluent Sikhs in the area and wants to build a state-of-the-art temple to include a lecture theatre and seminar room.

Mr Jogi, said: “We are surprised to learn from last week’s Slough Observer that certain individuals need to build a new gurdwara in the Slough area.

“We assure that all the needs and requirements of the Sikh community are fulfilled by the existing two gurdwaras. We have never received any complaints that their needs require consideration.

“The construction of the new gurdwara will create further division within the community and will affect the homogeneous living of the society. We urge upon the local authority to please refrain from allocation of the site for this request.”

Mr Chaggar added: “We don’t need another gurdwara there is enough. It will divide the community.”
