Amritsar, Punjab: Disappointed over the “out of the way” premature release of former police cat turned cop Gurmeet Pinky, Amrik Singh of Ludhiana met Akal Takht Jathedar Gurbachan Singh on August 21. He demanded Giani Gurbachan Singh’s intervention in this matter and wanted him to issue directions to the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) asking them to explain their favour for the human rights abuser.
Giani Gurbachan Singh gave a patient hearing to Amrik Singh. He told him that he would direct the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) to help them in his legal battle. He asked for the case file so that it could be examined by legal experts.
Jathedar reprotedly did not make any commitment regarding seeking explanation from ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) for it’s favour to Gurmeet Pinky.
“The state government surreptitiously released Pinki. This has left us shocked. We fought a long legal battle spanning over six years to see him convicted, but he is a free man today. We will again mobilise whatever little resources we have to fight yet another legal battle,” said Amrik Singh, whose only son was killed by Gurmeet Pinky in 2001.
Though Gurmeet Pinky was awarded imprisonment for life, he released from after serving just seven years and seven months behind the bars.
“While the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed Pinki’s bail plea six times, calling him ‘unscrupulous and mischievous,’ the state government remitted his sentence for ‘good’ conduct,” said Amrik Singh.
He alleged that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) government had thrown all norms to the wind while ordering Pinki’s release.
“The Akalis, who came to power on Panthic agenda, are now siding with anti-Panthic forces,” he alleged.
