sarna-congressLudhiana, Punjab: The 1984 Genocide victims will gherao the Justice TS Doabia Commission, appointed by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) to probe the incidents of violence due to the congregation of religious leader Ashutosh, during its visit to Ludhiana on December 19. The president of the DSGMC, Paramjit Singh Sarna, had appointed the commission for a probe into the police firing on protesting Sikhs on December 5.

Bay Area Sikhs launch BART ads in Oakland, SF to remember pogrom

sikh-adSan Francisco, California: A nonprofit Sikh organization launched a BART poster campaign this month in hopes that a photograph of an elderly crying woman will spur mainstream riders to learn more about the massacre of people in India 25 years ago. The 20-poster, $10,000-campaign on BART stations in San Francisco and Oakland is spearheaded by the Fremont-based Ensaaf group, said co-director Jaskaran Kaur. Ads appeared Nov. 2, and will last a month. The campaign is in honor of the 25th anniversary of pogroms against Sikhs in India.

56 riots-hit families get relief after 25 yrs

totaChandigarh, Punjab: Waking up from slumber after 25 years, the government has given a sum of Rs 1.12 crore as ex-gratia grant to as many as 56 families of victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots, who had migrated from the affected states and are presently residing in Moga district.

Life term for 3 in ’84 riots case

1984_riots_222New Delhi, India: Having held them guilty on August 22 of attempting to murder three members of a Sikh family during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, a Delhi court today sentenced life imprisonment to the three convicts, Mangal Sein alias Billa, Bhagat Singh and Brij Mohan Verma. Besides, a fine of Rs 6.18 lakh each was slapped on the trio, failure to pay which would invite an additional imprisonment for four years.
