Fatehgarh, Punjab: After dispatching food and medicine to flood-ravaged victims in Jammu and Kashmir, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided to offer free education to girls of affected families, in colleges run by SGPC.
Addressing the media at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, general secretary, SGPC, said around 25 girls were being educated free of cost at Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College in various professional courses while 25 more were studying at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University as well as five students at Mata Gujri College.
Bhaur said a delegation of five members including Gurmohan Singh Walia, vice-chancellor, Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Major General BS Lamba, principal, Guru Granth Sahib World University, Jatinder Singh Sidhu, director-principal, Mata Gujri College and Manpreet Singh, executive engineer, SGPC, had left for Srinagar to take stock of the situation so that they could further devise measures to provide aid to flood victims.
Bhaur further said SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar was to lead the delegation but due to the unfortunate demise of Jathedar Jagdev Singh Talwandi, he could not do so.
A second team of doctors and paramedics from Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College, Sri Amritsar had also been dispatched to Srinagar.
He said the SGPC had set up five relief camps under the supervision of Daljit Singh Bedi, additional secretary, SGPC, to provide food, blankets, clothes and other items of daily use.
