Seechewal launches 50 MLD treatment plant

Jalandhar, Punjab: The much-awaited 50 million litre per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant was finally inaugurated by renowned environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal on the occasion of World Environment Day at Kala Sanghian drain on Thursday.

The drain which flows with polluted water into the Sutlej river can now be cleaned with the treatment plant which will help flow clean water into the river by removing filth from the water.

Even the Punjab Pollution Control Board has certified the drain as having extremely poisonous metals in it.

The project was inaugurated after consistent efforts and protests held by Seechewal to implement it for purifying the polluted water. I nitially, the plant will clean only 20 million litre per day water but after some time the capacity will be increased to 50 million litre per day (MLD).

During t he inauguration, the renowned environmentalist said that with the start of project, people living around the 45 kilometer long drain could take a breath of relief as the water flowing into this drain was carrying poisonous chemicals with it which could cause serious diseases or lead to cancer.

“Strict action should be taken under Water Act 1974 against the officials who forced people to drink this poisonous water,” the environmentalist further said.
