Ropar gurdwara installs solar plant for langar

Ropar, Punjab: Reducing the fuel expenses drastically on preparing langars for 6,000 devotees visiting Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Gurdwara on the Chandigarh-Ropar highway at Solakhian village everyday here, the gurdwara management has set up a solar energy plant. The management will save environment as well as Rs 5 lakh every month, says the care taker of the gurdwara, Sant Baba Sarup Singh.

Claiming it to be the first such gurdwara in the country to prepare langar using steam generating through solar energy, the Sarup said earlier, diesel, LPG, wood and electricity were being used for fuel which would cost Rs 5 lakh every month.

However, it was decided to install a solar energy plant to cook the meal, which includes vegetable curry, dal, rice, tea and kheer.

Now the management will save fuel as well as manpower to prepare meals as it requires only one person to operate the plant, he said. Following this success, now the management has decided to install solar lights to illuminate gurdwara, added Sarup.
