Narangwal Khurad, Ludhiana: Residents of this nondescript village of Ludhiana district are tight-lipped over the state government’s decision to release Lakhwinder Singh Lakha on parole. He was convicted in the infamous Beant Singh assassination case. However, they have been eagerly awaiting his release.
Grateful to Gurbakash Singh Khalsa for paving the way for his son’s release, Darshan Singh said the paper work for the release had been completed at Mohali on Wednesday. He further said the release was delayed as the administration had not completed the formalities.
Lakha’s sister Paramjit Kaur said all the members of the family were eager for his release. “We were told yesterday that Lakha would be released on Thursday, but sadly that was not to be,” said Paramjit.
A former Punjab Police constable, who was the first to be arrested in connection with Beant Singh’s assassination, was born and brought up here.
Wishing to remain anonymous, villagers echoed similar views that everybody, irrespective of caste or creed, who has completed his or her sentence, should be released from prison.
Overall, villagers were grateful to Gurbakash Singh Khalsa for paving the way for the release of certain detainees, including Lakha.
