‘Punjabi Heritage Month in Canada to be reality soon’

Ludhiana, Punjab:  Soon Punjabis living in Canada would showcase their culture to all communities living in the country, if the a bill tabled by member of parliament (MP) Jasbir Sandhu from Surrey North is passed in the Canadian Parliament.

Sandhu was in the city to meet mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria on Wednesday.
Sandhu said the Punjabi Heritage Month would be celebrated every April, if the bill was passed.

He said, “Our food, attire, culture and all other aspects are so bright that they deserve to be showcased at the international level. There are a large number of communities that live in Canada, with the Punjabi community being in the majority among them. People should know who we are.”

Jasbir Sandhu, who belongs to Rurka Kalan village in Jalandhar, entered Canadian politics in 1991 and became an MP in 2011.

He said although the level of discrimination with south Asians had decreased to some extent, it was still prevalent in Canada.

“Ludhiana being an industrial city of north India could have positive impact in building stronger trade relations with Canada. The only problem for trade is the distance and taxes that are imposed on Canadian goods that increase their cost,” Sandhu said.
On the occasion, Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria said, “There is only one problem here that the work culture is absent that I am trying hard to revive. However, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal is making several efforts to improve infrastructure of Punjab.”
