Medical science books to be translated into Punjabi

The medical students may be able to read subjects like anatomy, cardiology and forensic biology and others in their curriculum in Punjabi language in the near future as Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, has decided to translate medical, nursing and other literature of modern medical sciences, presently available in English, into Punjabi language.

The project will be completed in five years and the university will also publish that books and shall hold the copyright for these books. The government had earlier proposed to initiate steps to write medical books and literature in Punjabi language.

For this purpose, the university has appointed assistant professor of Rajindra college, Patiala, Dr Harshinder Kaur, who is a member of the faculty of medical sciences, as project coordinator to recommend and work out modalities for getting the printing of medical books in Punjabi version. “It is a brainchild of university vice-chancellor Dr SS Gill, who started working on the project after getting nod from the state government,” Dr Harshinder said.

She added that the university has felt that it was an urgent requirement to promote the publication of medical and nursing books and literature in Punjabi language. “The translation of books will not only help students, especially coming from Punjabi medium background to have easy access to write and learn medical theories in a more effective and comprehensive manner, but translation will also help patients to have a better understanding and knowledge about their diseases,” she said.

Harshinder added that, for this purpose, principals of nursing colleges have been asked to start working on the project.

Besides it, more than 60 faculty members of medical sciences, presently working in different colleges, will work on the translation of books of MBBS and BDS, she said.
