Sikh genocide: BJP campaign appeals to Pranab Mukherjee for justice

Jammu: A Delhi court had on April 30 acquitted Kumar in an Sikh genocide case, leading to protests by members of the community who are demanding reopening of the case against him.

BJP on Thursday started a signature campaign here seeking President Pranab Mukherjee’s intervention on behalf of the victims of the 1984 Sikh genocide who the party alleged had been denied justice.

“It is most unfortunate that thousands of innocent Sikhs were killed in just 48 hours in Delhi and other parts of the country.

“Eyewitnesses have… clearly pointed towards Congress leaders Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler and HKL Bhagat as being (among those) who provoked the people to (carry out) the attacks,” said BJP leader Varinderjeet Singh.

Adding that 29 years later, the perpetrators of the killings were yet to be brought to book, Singh alleged that those responsible were being shielded by the government.

BJP state secretary S Charanjit Singh Khalsa was also present for the launching of the campaign, which party sources said would last till the end of this month.
