Jalandhar, Punjab: A day after the voting in Delhi, the SAD’s Delhi unit led by its president Manjit Singh GK reached Punjab today to canvass for the SAD-BJP candidates.
Manjit, who also heads the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), along with Shahdra legislator Jatinder Singh Shanty, SAD Delhi vice-president Onkar Singh Thapar and leader Avtar Singh Hit, reached the city this evening to mobilise the local SAD cadre before heading to Amritsar for a meeting.
The SAD Delhi chief said the party would allocate them election duties during the meeting. “So far, all we know from Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal is that we will have to focus on four main constituencies — Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib, Patiala and Bathinda.”
Manjit said the Lok Sabha elections were an opportunity for the SAD’s Delhi unit to help the Punjab cadre. “The party workers from Punjab had given me the much-needed support during the DSGMC elections which we hands down. In Delhi MC elections, we won five of the seven seats. In the Delhi assembly elections, we got three of the four seats that we contested. Now, it’s our time to pay back.”
The team head said that he would be visiting other constituencies, including Jalandhar. “My maternal grandparents belong to Kot Badal Khan village near Nurmahal and my paternal grandparents hail from Chak Kalan village of Nakodar.”
On BJP Amritsar candidate Arun Jaitley’s stand against the construction of Operation Bluestar memorial, Manjit said he was firm on his demand for the memorial. Manjit further said that he was against the SIT on the 1984 Sikh genocide, but he was quick enough to add, “Whatever differences emerge will be settled among the coalition partners after the elections in the Common Minimum Programme.”
