Gurdaspur firing victim Ranjit Singh got kicked out from hospital

Amritsar, Punjab: Ranjit Singh (18),who was injured seriously in police firing during a bandh in Gurdaspur on March 29, was discharged from Government Hospital in Amritsar after medical authorities claimed he was in good physical condition while his parents disagreed.

His father Jaswant Singh told HT at his house in Pandher village near Gurdaspur on Thursday that he was shocked when told by Amritsar hospital authorities that Ranjit had been discharged as he was fast recovering.

His father said that doctors had told him on Wednesday that Ranjit would have to be operated upon after about two months and they had now discharged him without any rhyme or reason.

The father claimed that Ranjit could hardly stand on his feet. He urged authorities to readmit his son in the hospital as he was getting good medical treatment there. He feared that his condition might worsen during his stay at home.

It was found that cleanliness in and around Ranjit’s house left much to be desired. The two-room house is surrounded by open cattlesheds and piles of cow dung where mosquitoes thrive.

Ranjit Singh was admitted in the ICU at Amritsar hospital after a bullet pierced the back of his left side, damaging one of his lungs.

Meanwhile, a team of Tibber police arrived at his house to record his statement. Ranjit had difficulty speaking. In his brief statement, Ranjit said that he was standing outside the shop, where he was employed, near gurdwara Ramgarhia on Tibri Road in Gurdaspur on the fateful day.

He claimed that after he ran through a street after violence erupted, he was chased by police who resorted to firing at youths running away.

When contacted, Gurdaspur deputy commissioner Siben C said that doctors might have discharged Ranjit on some medical grounds.
