Mississauga, Canada: Dixie Gurdwara is getting solar panels.Even as world leaders in Copenhagen are struggling to take positive decisions, the local Sikh community is setting an example and taking the lead to go climate friendly. Mississauga’s Dixie Gurdwara is going be the first temple in North America to go green.
“Solar panels will be installed soon and work on the project started from today,” it was announced at a two-day conference on climate change in Mississauga, held over the weekend.
In partnership with Climate Action Network – a Toronto-based organization that works on different levels to protect the environment – Dixie Gurdwara and Eco Sikh hosted the two-day conference at the Dixie Road Gurdwara and Malton Gurdwara over the weekend.
Punjabi spiritual leader, Baba Sewa Singh, spoke about the history of India and important environmental projects he is initiating.
Rajwant Singh from Eco Sikh explained how the Punjabi-Canadian community can solve climate change and other environmental problems locally by greening their gurdwaras.
The leaders also expressed disappointment over the federal government’s failure to protect the environment and make a visible appearance in Copenhagen.
“We have decided to take the lead on this very important issue because the federal government is not doing enough, even in Copenhagen,” Gurpreet Sehra, Media Liaison Officer of Climate Action Network, told Focus.
“We believe although climate change is a global issue, it has to be targeted at the community and individual levels,” said Sehra.
She said work on the solar panel project has started, and Dixie is going to be the first-ever green gurdwara in North America.
We should unite all at all levels to protect enviorment in global prospective and live a life close to nature. Spirituality and science jointly should show a path to the global cumminity.Congratulations to all who helped in this project at dixie gurdwara sahib. Waheguru bless all. Jagjit Singh Mukandpuri.
