UK: Community leaders from across Southampton were invited to a Sikh temple to discover more about upcoming celebrations in the city.
The Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Derek Burke, was joined by others at a meet and greet at the Gurdwara Nanaksar in Bevois Valley to discover more about Vaisakhi, the Sikh festival which takes place on Sunday, April 14.
Visitors also heard more details about Nagar Kirtan, a procession through the city on April 21.
Harjinder Singh Virdee, from the Peterborough Road gurdwara, said: “The aim of this event is to inform and to make people aware of what Sikhism is all about. It’s a meet and greet event allowing people to come together and ask different questions.”
Vaisakhi celebrates the birth of the brotherhood of the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, who laid down the foundation of the Panth Khalsa, which represents the commitment to a way of life of harmony for Sikhs.
