On Thursday 6th August on the Adil Ray show on the BBC Asian Network, the news had two stories about Sikhs. One was about the cancellation of a Gurdas Maan concert in Canada, the other about Sikh soldiers joining the Queen’s guard in the UK for the first time.
During the talk about the cancellation of the Gurdas Mann Concert Adil came out and said along the lines of “that’s a stupid reason for having a kirpan and do Sikhs really need them?”
This is not the first time Adil has said this and the BBC network not take no action.
Asian network always make it out that he/she other presenters are doing nothing wrong but when it comes to Islam, you see trains and buses get blown up over comments. The Asian network is a government ran and owned station how can they allow comments of such nature, when presenters like Johnathon Ross get banned for making prank phone calls. By the way, There is no recording online as BBC have taken it off ? How convenient !!!!???

Statement from the Asian Network:
“On Thursday 6th August on the Adil Ray show on the BBC Asian Network, the news had two stories about Sikhs. Adil talked about both with the newsreader after the bulletin.
“We have had a few responses from listeners who thought that he was in some way mocking the Kirpan or Sikhism, or judging the rights and wrong of wearing the Kirpan. That response has led to discussion on some message boards.
“The Asian Network and Adil Ray would like to assure all our listeners that he did not mock the Kirpan or Sikhism.
“He was expressing surprise at the cancellation of the gig over the Kirpan issue, and then to link the two stories he made a remark about the British Army and whether it would be open-minded enough to let Kirpan wearers in. At no time did he make any judgement about people’s faith or the rights and wrongs of wearing the Kirpan.
“The Asian Network and Adil Ray welcome the fact that he has listeners of all faiths who enjoy his humour and presentation.”

It is natural for human nature to have biased viewpoint when one muslim is discussing about another. You disagree with him when he is making -ve on some form of islam but quick to say that he has not done anything wrong when talking about -ve on sikhs. If a white man host show called citizen khan, you will be quick to label him racist ?

Any slurs against a religion are blasphemous and should be subject to appropriate disciplinary procedures & a public apology.

And, what’s really very sad is that Ravinder Bhogal, a woman hailing from the Sikh community is publicly ‘chasing’ Adil Ray and calling him her NBF (new boyfriend) on her Twitter account for all to see – that’s right, Ravinder is doing the ‘hunting’ and not Adil. Ravinder has already insulted our religion and culture by using her Sikh name whilst writing a book tottered with sexual innuendos and insulting her Mother in the credits. I think we need to act against the Ravinder’s in our community before dealing with others from outside. Ravinder’s Twitter feed can be found at: http://twitter.com/cookinboots she is supposedly a role model for young Sikh’s (She has a Sikh name and posts a picture of her turbaned Grandfather in her book) yet teaches our children that sexual promiscuity is the way forward!!! She is the first ‘Sikh’ to carry on in such a way; prior to this our community had been a very respectable one

I have understood the shocks of complaints that the BBC have given to its lisseners, but i suggest that the BBC lissen and improve presentation and that the communities unite to understand that this is a radio preentor and should be given opporrtunity to present. As a muslim we have alot of bias remarks on the streets, and other radio stations from lisseners and some Talk Sport Presentors but never demand attacks on individuals we are people the Lord is Stronger we all love all and Adil Ray is not Stupid we are one Hindustani, Pakistani, Muslim., Christian, hindu, Sikh , we are one remember the roots of Sikhism Guru Nanak was a devote amongst Hindu and Muslims and Pir Ka Pir he spent time in Baghdad and amongst Pir Faqir- when died Muslims said he was muslim, Hindus said a Hindu fighted for the body and then came to the body it vanished and found roses- muslims burried them and Hindus cromated them-ask a skoller of islam or sikhism- i finalise- Wahi Guru Ki Fateh Aur Wahi Guru Ki Khalsah x x x one love x x x

i’ve listened to his show ,complained to bbc asian network that adil ray mentions constantly islam,muslims,karachi fm and seems to even consider pakistani singers to be better than hindustani ones…….he is a disgrace to every tax payer who does not wanna listen to his shit for a few hours……….just switch to radio 1 or galaxy fm far better than that twat….DO US A FAVOUR BBC AND SACK THIS MULLAH FROM OUR AIRWAVES….

I understand that you were left extremely angry and concerned by the content of the programme.
On Thursday 6 August 2008 during The Adil Ray Show on the BBC Asian Network, the news covered two stories about Sikhs. One was about the cancellation of a Gurdas Maan concert in Canada, the other about Sikh soldiers joining the Queen’s Guard in the United Kingdom for the first time. Presenter Adil Ray talked about both stories with the newsreader after the bulletin.
Some listeners mistakenly thought that he was in some way mocking the Kirpan or Sikhism or judging the perceived rights or wrongs of wearing the Kirpan which has led to discussion on some messageboards based on incorrect information.
The BBC Asian Network and Adil Ray would like to assure all listeners that he did not mock the Kirpan or Sikhism but was merely expressing surprise at the cancellation of the concert over the Kirpan issue, and then to link the two stories he made a remark about the British Army and whether it would be open-minded enough to let Kirpan wearers in.
It is important to be clear that at no time did Adil Ray make any judgement about people’s faith or wearing the Kirpan and both the BBC Asian Network and Adil Ray welcome the fact that he has listeners of all faiths who enjoy his humour and presentation.
We note that you allege Adil Ray stated something to the effect of ‘That’s a stupid reason for having a Kirpan and do Sikhs really need them’. To be absolutely clear, Adil Ray did not say this or indeed anything like this – as explained, he simply commented upon the decision by the organisers to cancel the concert and then discussed with the newsreader the story of the Queen’s Guard.

BBC Complaints
My complaint to the BBC was bit harsher than the ones I have read (possibly as I was really annoyed):
“I cannot believe, the BBC can allow any of its employees to make stupid hurtful comments as in this case:
The Adil Ray show commented hurtfully to all Sikhs (the 5th largest religion with just over 20 million followers).
I want to know what action the BBC is going to take about this and reading some on-line articles I understand this is not the first time the same person has done this either.
Obviously this person is very biased, against Sikhs and your process is flawed in that it does not appear to be capable of correcting this bias, so what do you intend to do this time? Moreover, why is he allowed on air of a public service?
I am unhappy in paying towards a license fee that allows such bias against any religion let alone mine.
The date and time and other details were added in other areas.
After submitting the complaint further details appeared clearly showing the escalation path, acording to this, the next step after a response (up to 10 days) is to send the complaint to Ofcom (http://www.ofcom.org.uk/), so all, please follow-up on this if the answer back is not satisfactory.
