Panj Pyares ask jathedars to resign over pardon to dera head
Amritsar, Punjab: In an unprecedented development, the Panj Pyares (five beloved ones of the Guru) of the Akal Takht on Friday morning asked the five Sikh high priests to resign as they had failed to respond to their summons over their decision to pardon Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in the 2007 blasphemy case without taking the ‘sangat’ (Sikh community) into confidence recently.
Before seeking the resignation of the jathedars, the Panj Pyares waited for them from 10.00am to 11.55 am at the Akal Takht in the Golden Temple complex here. When nobody turned up, the jathedars were asked to resign.
The Panj Pyares said, “We had summoned the jathedars of all takhts to seek their explanation on why pardon was granted to the Dera Sacha Sauda chief. But the jathedars haven’t bothered about the summons and do not care about Sikh tenets. They should immediately resign.”
The Panj Pyaras also asked the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) executive to immediately withdraw all facilities given to the jathedars.
There was no immediate reaction from the jathedars and from the SGPC even though some of its members were present when the Panj Pyaras demanded the resignations at the Akal Takht. The SGPC members chose to remain silent spectators.
