Amritsar, Punjab: The Sikh clergy is all set to deliberate on the suggestions made to the Akal Takht by various bodies regarding the Nanakshahi Calendar controversy during its meeting here on February 6. While the Sant Samaj is pushing for reverting to the Bikrami Calendar, other Sikh organisations have advocated the need to implement the original Nanakshahi Calendar. At present, amended Nanakshahi Calendar is being followed.
The Sant Samaj has been arguing that the Bikrami Calendar was acceptable to all unlike the Nanakshahi Calendar. In its representation to the Akal Takht, the Sant Samaj had stated that Nanakshahi Calendar had created a lot of confusion among the Sikh community and ‘gurpurabs’ were being observed on different dates in different places.
On the other hand, a delegation of panthic organisations led by former Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Kewal Singh had demanded that the original Nanakshahi Calendar should be implemented. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh confirmed they had received suggestions regarding the calendar from various outfits.
