Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA: Wisconsin Sikhs plan to memorialize last year’s shooting tragedy with religious observances and a 6-kilometer fundraising run/walk.
Temple member Pardeep Kaleka says the Aug. 5 anniversary will be preceded by a religious ceremony in which priests read the entire Sikh holy book aloud from cover to cover. Members of the temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek also plan other ceremonies to purify the building.
The observance will be in memory of the six temple members who died when a random gunman opened fire. Four others, including a responding police officer, were injured. The gunman died during a shootout with police.
Oak Creek Mayor Stephen Scaffidi says the temple and city will collaborate on a 6K run, or 3.7 miles, in honor of the six victims.
