New York,USA: South Salem will be a musical, colorful sight Sunday as Sikhs from across the West Coast will gather for a a nagar kirtan, a religious procession set to hymns.
This weekend’s parade is the seventh annual event the Dasmesh Darbar Sikh Temple will host in celebration of the martyrdom of the Sikhs’ fifth Guru.
The procession will begin at the temple, 860 Oakhill Ave. SE, at 11 a.m. It will head north on Commercial Street then toward South Salem High School via Rural Street. A celebration is planned on the high school parking lot, with food, performances and speakers.
After about two hours at the high school, the parade will head back via 12th Street.
Temple president Bahadur Singh estimated more than 1,000 people will participate in the celebration. The event is free and open to the public.
