SGPC to focus on winter season while sending help to J&K: Makkar

Amritsar, Punjab: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will continue with its help to flood-hit people of Jammu and Kashmir, but it will be “need-based help” now onwards.

Stating this before the media here on Wednesday, SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said needbased help was the need of the hour in J&K. “This was more so as with the winters approaching and a large number of flood-hit families will need protection from the cold,” he said.

Makkar said, “With this in mind, the SGPC will focus on sending warm clothes, blankets, mattresses, cardigans to J&K. Blankets and warm clothes had already been dispatched to Srinagar in two consignments.”

To ascertain the exact requirements of the flood-affected people, Makkar has formed a fivemember SGPC team, which will leave for Srinagar on October 4.

The SGPC members are — executive members Rajinder Singh Mehta and Karnail Singh Panjoli and additional secretary Daljit Singh Bedi. The other two members are Manpreet Singh, executive engineer, and Satwant Singh, both of the construction wing of the SGPC.

This is for the first time that two technical experts are being sent to Srinagar. This is because the SGPC chief had during his visit to Srinagar last month, expressed the desire that the gurdwara body was keen to take up rehabilitation projects for the flood-affected families.
