Giani Mal Singh tipped to be new jathedar of Takht Kesgarh Sahib

Anandpur Sahib, Punjab: Giani Mal Singh, head granthi of Harmandar Sahib, Amritsar, is likely to be appointed new jathedar of Takht Kesgarh Sahib here.

Sources in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) say that it’s almost final who would hold the coveted Sikh religious post that has fallen vacant after the death of Giani Tarlochan Singh. “The decision on the new jathedar will be taken at the SGPC executive committee meeting coming up at Gurdwara Katana Sahib on August 15,” SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann has demanded that the jathedar be appointed from among former SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar, Baba Sarabjot Singh Bedi and Bhai Ashok Singh Bagria, as they were “most suitable for holding the post”.

Heads of many religious sects and social and political organisations participated in the memorial service. Paying floral tributes to Giani Tarlochan Singh, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal described him a great personality and an eminent Sikh scholar who had propagated the tenets of Sikhism worldwide through discourses.

“Gianiji’s services for the well- being of Sikhism will always be the guiding light to inspire humanity,” said Badal. “His campaign against drug addiction, female foeticide and environmental pollution will be remembered,” he added.

Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is also president of the state’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), said Giani Tarlochan Singh had served not only religion but also the mankind.

The CM, deputy CM and heads of various organisations also gave away turbans to lawyer Hardev Singh, son of the departed preacher. Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh; state health minister Madan Mohan Mittal; state Bhartiya Janata Party president Kamal Sharma; Shiromani Gurdwara Pabandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar; SGPC general seceratry Sukhdev Singh Bhaur; Damadami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh; Taruna Dal (Nihang sect) head Nihal Singh Harian Belan; former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Avtar Singh Hit; Budha Dal chief Baba Balbir Singh; SGPC’s Amarjit Singh Chawla and Baba Labh Singh were present on the occasion.

Baba Kashmira Singh, president of SGL Jan Sewa Trust, Jalandhar, said he would open a 1,000-bed multi-specialty hospital dedicated to Giani Talrlochan Singh at Anandpur Sahib.
