American Sikhs Look For Seva Opportunities On The Second Anniversary Of The Oak Creek Massacre

Oak Creek, Wi, USA: On August 5, 2012, we were shocked as a nation to witness the mass shooting at a gurdwara in Oak Creek, WI. To commemorate the two-year anniversary of that horrific event, the Oak Creek sangat is organizing the Chardhi Kala 6K Memorial Run and Walk to be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014.

If you cannot attend this event in Oak Creek, we call on you to show your support by organizing or participating in a Day of Seva event (selfless community service) in your local city on the same day. Many sangats have already committed to a Day of Seva event on August 2, 2014 – will you follow their lead?

Here are 3 ways to take action this year:

  1. Join in the Chardhi Kala 6K Memorial Run and Walk in Oak Creek, WI on August 2, 2014.
  2. Organize/Participate in a Day of Seva Event in your local community on August 2, 2014.
  3. Send a message of support to the survivors and victims’ families.

While the Oak Creek tragedy was and continues to be difficult for our community, it molded us all together, Sikh and non-Sikh, to move forward through our combined strength and eternal optimism for humanity. For Sikhs, this spirit is called Chardi Kala. In the spirit of Chardi Kala, as we approach the two-year anniversary of the horrific events that forever altered Sikh and American history, we urge all to never forget August 5, 2012, to continue to learn from that day and march full force ahead in unity.
