Bright Sikh students get their reward

Malaysia: SOME 32 Sikh students were honoured by the Penang Sikh Association (PSA) for their achievements in their school examinations.

The recipients who excelled in their UPSR, PMR or SPM from 2009 to 2011, received certificates of achievement and also cash prizes.

Gurpreet Kaur, 18, scored straight A’s in her 2009 PMR and SPM last year.

Her Punjabi language teacher Kuldip Kaur, 46, expressed her happiness over Gurpreet’s achievement and also for scoring A in her Punjabi Language paper in both public examinations.

“Many of the Sikh children want to learn Punjabi because it is their mother tongue and they can use it in prayers and read the Holy Book which is in Punjabi. It is important to know your own language,” she said after receiving the excellence award from Datuk Keramat assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo and PSA president Balvinder Singh.

Kuldip accepted the award on behalf of Gurpreet at the Wadda Gurdwara Sahib in Jalan Gurdwara on Saturday.

The total cash prize for the PSA’s annual award event this year was RM2,425.

Jagdeep Singh also contributed the same amount for the event from his constituency’s fund.

He urged the students to be grateful to their parents and to study hard for a better future.

“Education is the biggest wealth we have. You can have as much money as you want but without education you cannot get to where you want to be,” he said.
