Amritsar, Punjab: Sikh athletes who have excelled at the school, college, university, state, and national levels on Tuesday received the Sikh Sports Star awards from religious organisation Akal Purakh Ki Fauj and the hands of British centenarian marathon runner Fauja Singh, a world record holder.
Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh; former jathedar Giani Kewal Singh; police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh; Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee information officer Jaswinder Singh Jassi and chief Khalsa Diwan president Charanjit Singh Chadha were present.
In his brief speech, Fauja Singh motivated Sikh children to preserve their distinct identity. He regretted that many Sikh athletes had cut their hair, thinking these to be obstacles in performance. Davinderpal Singh of the “Indian Idol” fame and Hargun Kaur of the “India’s Got Talent” fame entertained the gathering.
