Chandigarh, Punjab: The announcement of Savita Bhatti as the candidate of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat is likely to upset the plans of the two major political parties — the Congress and the BJP —which are yet to announce the names of their candidates.
Bhatti, wife of late comedian-actor-director Jaspal Bhatti, will bank upon the anti-corruption campaign started by her husband during the late 1980s.
Though AAP had started its fight against corruption only a few years ago, Bhatti’s family had been doing the same from the last many years.
Her late husband — who used comedy as a tool to highlight corruption before the masses —enjoyed a good reputation in the city. This is bound to help Savita in upcoming election.
Upon getting the AAP ticket, Bhatti said, “I am thankful to God. My husband fought against corruption throughout his life. It is only due to his anti-corruption campaign that I have been chosen for the ticket.”
On Saturday, Bhatti paid obeisance at the Golden Temple, Amritsar. She will start her election campaign from the Sector 17 plaza on Sunday. This is the same place where her late husband used to highlight social issues.
Hailing from the Sikh community — with nearly 80,000 voters in the city —can also play a crucial role in Bhatti’s favour.
