New Delhi: The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh G.K. today welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court which commuted the death penalty of Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar.
The DSGMC took up the case of Bhullar at different levels. “Bhullar never deserved the sentence as the basis on which he was sentenced to death was weak and one of his companions was acquitted,” said Manjit Singh, adding that Bhullar is not mentally sound now which is yet another reason for commuting his death sentence.
The apex court gave its judgement on a Public Interest Litigation seeking commutation of extreme penalty in the case as there was an inordinate delay in the disposal of mercy petition by the President, he said.
The DSGMC took up the case of commutation of death penalty to Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar at different levels. In a communication to the German embassy, the DSGMC had appealed to the German government to build pressure on the Indian government for waiving the death penalty as when Bhullar was extradited from Germany, it was agreed by the Indian government that he would not be given death sentence, he said.
