Kapurthala, Punjab: The followers of environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal on Sunday celebrated eco- friendly Diwali at Sultanpur Lodhi and Seechewal village.
Instead of bursting firecrackers, they illuminated the banks of the Holy Bein with diyas and planted trees at different locations to celebrated the festival. Earlier in the day, Seechewal addressed a gathering during a religious function at his village.
“It’s the festival of lights,” said the environmentalist, adding: “Let us not destroy its spirit by creating noise pollution. Let us not disturb patients and senior citizens, and let us save money for charity.”
Community radio channel Avtar Radio ran appeals all day to motivate people to avoid playing with firecrackers on Diwali night. Seechewal also paid homage to the victims of the 1984 genocide in Delhi
