SGPC sends five truckloads of relief material to J&K

Amritsar, Punjab: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar on Wednesday flagged off five truckloads of relief material to the flood-hit state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

Besides essential kitchen items, the relief consisted of blankets, quilts, mattresses, jackets and other warm clothes. In view of the winters, the SGPC is laying stress on sending warm clothing to the flood-hit state.

Talking to mediapersons, Makkar said that he had received the report of the fivemember sub-committee that had returned from Srinagar. The sub-committee had gone to assess the extent of damage suffered by Sikh families residing in Srinagar due to the floods.

“We will take up this report in the meeting of the executive on October 20. Thereafter the extent of monetary and other relief to be provided by the SGPC to Sikh families will be decided”, he said while pointing out that monetary relief just cannot be provided to each and every family, so the extent of damage to life and property will have to be considered before finalising the list of benefactors.

Two of the five truck loads of relief sent to the state will be handed over to Be gum Shamim Firdausi, MLA and Chairperson, J and Kashmir State Commission for Women. She had made a request to the SGPC in this regard.
