Rs 25 cr to be spent on historical monuments, says minister

Mohali, Punjab: A Jang-e-Azadi memorial will be set up at Kartarpur, near Jalandhar, at a cost of Rs 200 crore. This was stated by Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Sohan Singh Thandal at Chappar Chiri today.

The minister, who had come to attend a function organised by the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Board in connection with the 344th birth anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, told mediapersons that the foundation stone of the memorial would be laid on October 19 by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

He said the memorial would include galleries giving glimpses of the contribution of Punjabis to the freedom movement, an open-air theatre and a library.

Thandal said Rs 25 crore would be spent on the maintenance of historical monuments in the state.

He said projects worth Rs 1,000 crore had been started in the state to encourage tourism. This would also help in creating job opportunities.

While addressing the gathering, Thandal said Baba Banda Singh Bahadur would be remembered forever as he fought against the oppression and atrocities of the Mughals and laid the foundation of the country’s independence.

The minister also inaugurated an exhibition on Baba Banda Singh Bahadur’s life and fight against the Mughals.

The tourism board organised painting and quiz competitions, “gatka” and traditional games on the occasion.
