Khalsa School parents appeal for help from Vancouver board

Vancouver,Canada: Asked to leave property it leases, Sikh school needs another location. Parents of students attending a private Sikh school in Vancouver are appealing for help as a deadline for their school to vacate the property it leases from the board of education approaches.

Worried about the future of Khalsa School, they have signed a petition and threatened to protest in front of the board office if board chairwoman Patti Bacchus won’t meet them to discuss their concerns. Bacchus said Thursday she’s willing to talk to the parents but can’t offer them a lifeline.

The board made it clear several years ago that it would soon need the east-side property on Prince Albert Street for public school students who are being displaced from their own school during seismic upgrades, she said. With upgrades soon to commence at L’École Bilingue, the district told Khalsa School officials last year that they must move by June 30.

“We are sympathetic to their situation,” Bacchus said. “But unfortunately, we really don’t have another option to offer them.”
