Fatehgarh Sahib gears up for 3-day mela

Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab: Elaborate arrangements have been made for the three-day annual
Shaheedi Jor Mela scheduled to be held from December 25 to mark the martyrdom of the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh, who were “bricked” alive here during the regime of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Thousands of devotees from all over the country and abroad will come here to pay their obeisance at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib.

The three-day religious function would begin with akhand path of Guru Granth Sahib at gurdwara Jyoti Swarup. Earlier, the jor mela was purely a religious affair, over the years it has assumed political colours.

The occasion has been used, particularly by the ruling party, to highlight its achievements and announce its priorities.

The opposition parties, too, take the opportunity to criticize the failures of the government during their political conference.

Senior leader of various political parties have been camping at the historical city for past few days to oversee preparations at their respective pavilions. On December 27, a nagar kirtan would be taken from Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib to Gurdwara Jyoti Swaroop, in a decorated palki sahib (palanquin).

Fatehgarh Sahib additional deputy commisioner (general) said to pay true homage to th Sahibzadas, there would be no circus, dance programmes, or any other amusement items at Jor Mela.
