Detainee Gurmeet Singh gets 28-day parole

Mohali, Punjab: A few hours after Sikh activists staged a dharna in front of the Burail Jail in Chandigarh today, the UT Administration issued a warrant for Gurmeet Singh’s release on a 28-day parole.

Gurmeet Singh, convicted in the Beant Singh assassination case, is lodged in Burail Jail along with co-accused Shamsher Singh and Lakhwinder Singh. Being a holiday tomorrow, he is now likely to be released on Thursday. The process for the release of Shamsher Singh and Lakhwinder is on.

Sikh activists, led by Harpal Singh Cheema and RP Singh, marched from Gurdwara Amb Sahib to the Burail Jail and held a dharna in front of the jail gate.

Later in the evening, the UT Administration issued the order for Gurmeet Singh’s release on a bond and two sureties. The order was signed by Maneesh Chaudhary, Inspector General of Prisons, UT. The detainee is required to give particulars of the place where he intends to reside during the period of his temporary release to the Patiala District Magistrate.

Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, on fast for the release of Sikh detainees, was shifted to Fortis Hospital after his health worsened. “He was administered a drip and discharged in the afternoon. He is much better now, ” said sources.

                                            Malti Thapar backs Khalsa’s demand

MOGA: President of Punjab Mahila Congress Dr Malti Thapar has extended support to Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa. Appealing to him to end his fast, she said he had already awakened the people on the issue of Sikh detainees. Accompanied by Youth Congress leader Sukhwinder Singh Danny and other local leaders, she joined the protest by Sikh activists in the city.
