SGPC to honour Asiad winners

Amritsar, Punjab: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided to honour the Asian Games medal winners associated with Punjab.

Lauding the achievements of Khushbir Kaur of Amritsar, who won the silver medal in the 20-kilometre race walk, and Patiala Khalsa College student Trisha Deb, who won two bronze medals in archery during the Incheon Asian Games in South Korea, SGPC president Avtar Singh said here on Monday that the two young women had done the country proud.

“Playing at the national level alone is big honour but the two athletes have won international glory,” said Makkar. He added that the SGPC promoted sport in its institutions and these victories would inspire other students.

He recalled that the SGPC had earlier prepared a kabaddi team and now had built three hockey academies. “I expect laurels in hockey tournaments next,” said Makkar. LAUDS PM FOR MEETING SIKH DELEGATION IN US

The Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his meeting a Sikh delegation in New York on his US visit and listening to their problems.

“Not only did he have a long meeting with the Sikh delegation, but also he agreed take up its issues with the US authorities,” SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar stated here on Monday.

The Sikhs raised issues related to the articles of faith, Sikh identity, racist attacks, and hate crime. “The SGPC has written time and again to foreign governments about these concerns. It was a good gesture from the PM to offer help,” said Makkar.
