Rupy Kaur’s Great Manchester Run 2014

rupy2My name is Rupy Kaur, I am 26 and was born with Cerebral Palsy. I have been inspired massively to make a difference by doing something personally very challenging.

Because of my condition, all my limbs have been effected meaning I have never been able to walk. All my life I have been dependent on a wheelchair. A few years ago I shockingly managed to stand very briefly using the side by the toilet. All my life this was something that seemed absolutely impossible and un-thought of. Doctors and healthcare professionals sort of dismissed the idea. So I decided to take it upon myself to challenge my abilities by purchasing a specialised walker costing over £2000.

I started very slowly with my Physios and PAs, walking just a few steps to start with but with constant training I can manage to walk to the end of the road and back.

A few weeks ago my aunt sadly passed away due to terminal cancer. This is when I decided I wanted to take a massive negative and turn it into something that could be positive by raising money and awareness for cancer research. My family and I have had an extremely hard past few months, so 20 other family members and I decided to sign up for the Bupa 10k run in Manchester on May the 18th in memory of my aunt who was extremely fit and healthy. At the young age of 54 she was a single parent whom had built a very successful career as a beauty therapist. During October 2012 she noticed she was constantly getting back pain but was dismissed by Doctors saying she needed to rest. In May 2013 the pain become unbearable so she was finally sent for a scan which detected cancer originating in the kidney with metastasis to the spine. Sadly she passed away three weeks ago.

I know it is going to be extremely challenging for me to complete this run but it is a challenge I’m ready to embark on. I am aiming to complete at least one mile in my walker and the rest in my wheelchair. If I can, I would hope to do the whole run in my walker.

My family and I are determined to raise huge awareness and money for this cause as one day we strongly feel it can be cured. Please share this story to raise awareness and inspire others to make a difference.
