Khalsa’s struggle fruitful: Makkar

Anandpur Sahib, Punjab: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar said here on Tuesday that the struggle launched by Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa for the release of Sikh prisoners had yielded results.

Talking to mediapersons here, he said the row regarding Gurdwara Gian Godri Sahib, Haridwar, was likely to be resolved soon. Makkar said a meeting would be held with Uttarakhand chief minister Vijay Bahuguna on January 6.

Gurdwara Gian Godri was built on a site which Guru Nanak visited in 1504-05. It is alleged that in 1978, the gurdwara was demolished under the area’s beautification drive; in 1984, the site was handed over to the Scouts and Guides Mission. Sikh organisations have been requesting the Uttarakhand government to restore the gurdwara land to them so that the shrine could be reconstructed.
