Girls’ gatka prowess on display

Panchkula, Haryana: Gatka (a martial art) by girls of class 4 and a BA first year student were the centre of attraction on the concluding day of Spring Fest organised by the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) at Yavnika, Sector 5, Panchkula.

Perneet Kaur (10) took training from a Gurdwara in Sector 38, Chandigarh, and had come to perform in the Spring Fest for the first time. She is the youngest girl in the group.

Stunts were displayed using heavy nets and swords. Also the girls showed acts by covering their eyes with a black cloth.

Nidhi, a student of BA first year of Government College, Sector 1, Panchkula, was seen displaying dangerous acts.

For Nidhi, gatka is not only her passion but a need as well after her father’s death.

“My father was really fond of the Sikh martial art so after his death I joined the training at Sector 38, Chandigarh. This is my first performance and it feels great to perform at such abig platform,” said Nidhi.

Meanwhile, the two-day fest concluded today. It was concluded by the Panchkula Deputy Commissioner SS Phulia. Several other officials of the HUDA were also present during the concluding ceremony.

Several competitions including mono-acting and kite flying were also held among various school students. The winners were felicitated by DC Phulia.
