New Delhi: The proposed building in memory of the 1984 riot victims at Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib would violate the sanctity of the shrine, claimed president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi), Paramjit Singh Sarna.
“Those killed inside the Golden Temple during Operation Bluestar were martyrs as they died for a cause. In Delhi thousands of Sikhs were murdered. They are not martyrs. So constructing a memorial on the premises of Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib is not right,” Sarna said.
He said his party was in favour of a memorial but outside the gurdwara. “The government can allot land for the same provided the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) applies for it,” he said.
Sarna alleged that the announcement on the memorial was motivated to ensure the Delhi Sikhs backed the BJP during the coming assembly elections in Delhi.
Since Sikh voters were in good numbers in West Delhi and South West Delhi, the DSGMC had announced that the stone for the memorial would be laid in the presence of the BJP national president, Rajnath Singh, and senior BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, Sarna alleged.
He claimed the SAD had won the DSGMC poll owing to the Congress folly in not lending its support to the Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi).
