Gurdwaras lead the way, go green

Ludhiana,Punjab: Apart from spreading the message of the gurbani, city gurdwaras are taking the leading on going eco-friendly. One such example is the Gurudwara Dukhniwaran, where more than 3,000 flower pots of chrysanthemum adorn the entrance and at a few other places in the gurdwara.

The Gurdwara management began the mission around three years back by distributing saplings to devotees and by planting them on pots on its premises. The result is visible now.

The management displays flowers as per the season and they are nurtured at the Gurmat Missionary College near the Jalandhar bypass. This college is also run by the gurdwara management.

“ We have grown many varieties of chrysanthemum and in the coming year we will grow more. We don’t have space for lawns, so this is our own way to love nature and make others aware too,” said Pritpal Singh, the president of the management before adding: “We wanted to gift five flower pots each to different religious institutions this year, but a lot of the varieties got damaged, so we could not. But we will do it in the next winter.”

Apart from Dukhniwaran Gurdwara, even the Gurudwara Sarabha Nagar has begun eco-friendly measures since last year. The management organised flower shows, competitions, painting competitions and even many other activities. Recently they also announced to start course on women self defense. Mohinder Singh Grewal, general secretary of this gurdwara said: “We strongly feel that we should spend our funds for social causes and environmental awareness tops all such activities.”
