CCTV footage helps nail 5 for stealing cash from Golden Temple

Amritsar,Punjab: The CCTV cameras installed on the Golden Temple premises helped nail five people in a case pertaining to theft of money during counting of cash from the ‘golak’ (treasury).

The Amritsar city police have booked five persons, including the associate manager of the Golden Temple in this regard. The five suspects have been identified as Manpreet Singh (sewadar), a resident of Guru Nanak Pura; Kuljit Singh (sewadar) of Makewal, Ajnala; Balbir Singh, Baldev Singh, both sewadars of Sewa Dal, Golden Temple and Gulzar Singh, associate manager, Golden Temple.

Sub- i nspector Bhagwan Singh of Galliara police post, who is investigating the case, said that a case has been registered in this regard against the suspects at Division E police station, on the complaint of temple’s manager.

The complainant had alleged that on February 2, while counting of cash was on, Manpreet Singh hid some packets of currency notes with the help of Kuljit Singh. The complainant alleged that one of the wads Kuljit Singh was hiding, which totalled Rs 80,000, fell down, when he left the room on the pretext of using the washroom, and the episode was recorded in the CCTV camera. Division-E SHO i nspector Sukhwant Randhawa said the suspects were nailed with the help of the CCTV camera footage. “The footage showed that Manpreet and Kuljit had hid some packets of currency notes and one of the packets had fallen from the pocket of Manpreet. The footage also showed that he was carrying more than one packet,” he said. The SHO said that Balbir and Baldev were booked for hand in glove with the two, as they ignored wads of cash during checking and let Manpreet and Kuljit to go out. The fifth suspect, Gulzar Singh, who was on duty to keep an eye on people counting the cash through the CCTV camera, too ignored the wrongdoing.The SHO said that efforts were on to arrest the suspects, who were absconding.
