Delhi, India: Advocate H.S. Phoolka contesting cases of 1984 riot victims has told former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh in a letter that his comments saying Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Kamal Nath were not involved in the riots had come as a shock.
“At this crucial juncture, when in Jagdish Tytler’s case we are ready to file an appeal against the acceptance of the clean chit given by the CBI, and in Kamal Nath’s case summons have already been issued by US courts and we are preparing to file a case against him in India as well, this statement coming from a Sikh leader of your stature would seriously hamper the case,“ Phoolka said.
“I am surprised… because I know that your views regarding these cases were different. This statement is contrary to… facts as well,“ the letter said. Phoolka cited Amarinder as having said that in relief camps set up after the 1984 riots, none of the victims had named Jagdish Tytler. “In this connection, I may remind you that a number of human rights activists and prominent citizens had visited the relief camps, and had stated that the victims had told them that Tytler was leading the mobs,“ he wrote.
He said he held Amarinder in high regard because he had resigned as MP in protest against Operation Bluestar. “Like me, others Sikhs too respect you as a person who took bold stands, I request you to immediately withdraw your statement and support us in our fight for justice for the victims,“ Phoolka pleaded.
